Dubai Customs and Emirates Air Cargo Explore Integration Strategies and Goods Transportation

Dubai Customs recently held a strategic meeting with Emirates SkyCargo, the air cargo division of Emirates Airline, which is recognized as the largest international airline in the world. The purpose of this meeting was to examine plans for seamless integration of air and sea cargo transportation, utilizing advanced logistical solutions and systems provided by Dubai Customs. This initiative aims to expedite shipment processes, enhance the flexibility of global supply chains, and support Dubai’s economic goals in developing a sophisticated and interconnected trading and logistics framework.

The extensive meeting took place at the Jebel Ali Customs Center in the TECOM area, attended by Mohammed Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Acting Director of Air Cargo Centers, Waleed Bin Darwish, Director of Marine Customs Centers, various inspection directors, and from Emirates SkyCargo, Abbas Haji, Vice President of Air Cargo Operations, Hendrik Leisens, Vice President of Operations and Planning, and Hamid Al Houthi, Director of Regulatory Affairs for Air Cargo.

During the gathering, officials presented a cutting-edge system for inspecting cargo and vehicles, including heavy and light equipment and yachts at Jebel Ali Port. The new X-Ray scanning technology significantly increases the port’s inspection capabilities while speeding up the procedural timeline, reducing manual inspection time from 6 hours to just 5 minutes. The device operates in two modes: stationary (“gantry”), where the vehicle is stopped, and mobile, scanning vehicles as they pass through the equipment.

Significant Opportunity

Mohammed Abdullah Al Suwaidi emphasized that this meeting serves as a significant opportunity for aligning visions between the public and private sectors and implementing best practices to facilitate trade, ensuring faster and more efficient supply chains. Discussions focused on synergizing air and sea freight logistics to bolster Dubai’s competitiveness as a leading global trading hub.

Abbas Haji remarked, “Collaborating with Dubai Customs enhances our ability to track shipments accurately and deliver integrated logistical solutions that guarantee timely delivery, fully adhering to customs regulations.”

Hendrik Leisens added that the connection between sea and air transport extends beyond logistics. It encompasses planning, data integration, and coordination among various stakeholders to ensure swift and efficient operations while minimizing potential delays and reducing inspection times for each shipment.

Waleed Bin Darwish confirmed that Dubai Customs is dedicated to creating an intelligent environment for shipment monitoring. This will help strike a balance between speed and efficiency while supporting businesses and investors through automated customs procedures.

Supply Chains

The meeting also focused on enhancing the fluidity of global supply chains originating from Dubai. Participants discussed methods for integrating digital systems and logistics services between maritime ports and air cargo centers in the emirate, ensuring precise tracking of commercial shipments and facilitating smooth transfers of goods from sea containers to air transport.

This meeting marks a critical step towards solidifying Dubai’s position as a comprehensive global logistics hub that connects markets in the Middle East with the rest of the world, reducing operational time and costs while ensuring compliance with the highest international customs standards.

Dubai Customs highlighted its ongoing efforts to develop innovative logistics solutions leveraging modern technologies and artificial intelligence. These initiatives are designed to enhance Dubai’s capability to tackle global supply chain challenges and ensure sustained trade flow under various circumstances. The department stated that these efforts align with Dubai’s economic objectives aimed at establishing the emirate as a strategic center for global trade, serving as a vital link between the East and West.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the importance of ongoing collaboration and coordination between Dubai Customs and Emirates SkyCargo. Both parties committed to expanding partnership opportunities in adopting smart systems and innovative solutions. They noted that the upcoming phase would witness greater operational integration and the development of joint initiatives that promote safe and sustainable trade, meeting future demands and enhancing investor and stakeholder confidence in Dubai’s customs and logistics framework.
