Emirates Airline has earned the prestigious Gold Tier ranking in the Noise Abatement Program for 2024 at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, becoming the only airline to receive this distinguished recognition. The airline scored 92.9 points, significantly surpassing the other carriers participating in the program that operate flights to the airport.
This program, launched by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is a voluntary initiative aimed at encouraging airlines to minimize noise levels by operating quieter aircraft, implementing specific noise reduction measures, and utilizing designated low-noise flight paths.
The Gold Tier recognition reflects Emirates Airline’s steadfast commitment to reducing noise levels at one of the world’s busiest and operationally complex airports. Since the program’s inception, Emirates has closely collaborated with the Port Authority, with its flight operations team continuously striving to exceed all program requirements. This achievement at one of the major global aviation centers adds to a series of accolades the airline has received in noise management over the years, including a Silver Tier ranking at Newark Airport and the Chairperson’s Award in the Low Noise Program at San Francisco Airport.
Measurements from Emirates’ fleet demonstrate noise levels that fall below the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for Chapter 4, with a cumulative margin of over 12 Effective Noise Units (ENU) in decibels. This is attributed to the airline’s use of wide-body, high-capacity aircraft that efficiently transport larger numbers of passengers, achieving an average of 1.75 million passenger kilometers per aircraft for each round trip. In other words, by filling its planes with passengers and operating non-stop long-haul flights, Emirates can carry more travelers while maintaining low noise levels.
The efficiency of operations, based on long-haul, high-capacity aircraft, significantly enhances overall noise efficiency. For example, the Airbus A380 operated by Emirates can carry 500 passengers in a single round trip, while using smaller aircraft for the same routes would require up to three flights in each direction and possibly a technical stop, resulting in six additional takeoffs and landings to accommodate the same number of passengers. Thanks to its extensive route network and wide-body fleet, Emirates successfully strikes a balance between meeting travel demand and minimizing noise impact on communities.
Moreover, air connectivity offers benefits that extend beyond airport boundaries, linking families and friends across continents, generating substantial economic activity in local communities, creating job opportunities, and supporting international trade and tourism that contribute to prosperity.
Reducing aircraft noise is essential for safeguarding the health and quality of life of communities near airports. Emirates’ commitment to minimizing noise impacts reflects its support for local communities in the destinations it serves, understanding that even small operational decisions can significantly affect the ground level.
The airline follows a comprehensive noise management strategy that encompasses all possible measures while maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency, including:
· Adherence to noise reduction procedures and scheduled timings for takeoffs and landings: Emirates strictly implements noise reduction procedures during takeoff mandated by local authorities and integrates them into standard operating procedures for all flight crews. The airline also fully adheres to timing and restrictions specific to each airport to ensure complete compliance with local standards.
· Use of preferential runways for noise reduction: Whenever operationally viable, Emirates prioritizes flights through designated low-noise runways, even in challenging weather conditions, while upholding the highest safety standards.
· Close monitoring and accountability: Emirates employs a policy of transparency and accountability in all its operations, with mandatory reporting in the event of any deviations from noise reduction procedures. These reports are carefully reviewed to identify root causes and implement necessary corrective actions.
· Quieter fleet: Emirates operates one of the quietest fleets in the global aviation sector, achieving cumulative noise levels below the thresholds established by ICAO in Chapters 4 and 14 of its regulations. The airline continues to invest in fleet modernization to ensure low noise performance in line with ongoing technological advancements.
· Collaboration with stakeholders: Emirates’ approach to noise management extends beyond technical aspects, as the airline works closely with regulatory bodies in various countries, regularly participating in meetings and specialized committees, and complying with all reporting and regulatory documentation requirements. This ongoing collaboration fosters trust and transparency with relevant authorities and local communities in the destinations it serves.
