Emirates Airlines has reshaped the travel landscape between the United States and Italy by strengthening its presence on the New York to Milan route, one of the most significant in a highly competitive market dominated by American carriers.
Utilizing the “fifth freedom” rights, Emirates has established its operations on the New York to Milan route with daily flights on the colossal A380 aircraft, effectively filling the gap left by the absence of the Italian carrier ITA on this critical route. The airline has capitalized on its expansive intercontinental network and extensive experience in long-haul operations, confidently stepping in to enhance the travel experience between the US and Italy with an unprecedented level of capacity and luxury.
Emirates has fundamentally altered the dynamics on the transatlantic route, elevating the standards of capacity, comfort, and service to a challenging benchmark. With this initiative, the airline not only expanded its footprint in the US-Italy market but also transformed the travel experience on this route, solidifying its leadership in one of the most competitive sectors globally.
Data from Cirium indicates that travel between the United States and Italy reached a total of 1,335 direct flights in both directions in December 2025, offering over 377,000 seats. While the New York to Rome route ranks highest for the number of flights, the New York to Milan route has emerged as one of the most competitive this year due to the influx of operators and the variety of aircraft utilized, prominently featuring Emirates’ A380.
The New York JFK to Milan Malpensa (MXP) route stands out in the market; Emirates is uniquely positioned as the sole carrier outside of the US and Italy operating a regular daily flight on this essential corridor, providing a luxurious travel experience aboard the A380, known for its high capacity and exceptional services. In contrast, Delta operates its daily flights using the B767-400ER, while American Airlines utilizes B777-200ER aircraft, and Norse Atlantic operates three weekly flights with Boeing 787s.
While the Rome to New York route remains the busiest in December, Emirates’ impact on the Milan route is particularly remarkable this month, evident in aircraft type, quality of service, and its ability to attract travelers seeking a distinctive transatlantic journey.
