Five Unique Aircraft Including a Chinese Model Highlight the Dubai Airshow

The Dubai Airshow 2025 is set to showcase five aircraft that are among the most remarkable in the realms of both civilian and military aviation, highlighting a unique blend of power, innovation, and advanced technical capabilities.

Making its debut at this event is the C909 from China’s COMAC, which represents the country’s first independent effort to develop a regional passenger aircraft.

The concept for the C909 emerged from a previous initiative to produce MD-80 aircraft in collaboration with McDonnell Douglas during the 1980s, before the project was unified under COMAC, which saw the aircraft enter service with Chengdu Airlines in 2016.

The C919, on the other hand, is China’s inaugural commercial aircraft capable of competing with globally dominant models like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. In the military sector, the JF-17 Thunder fighter jet is making its third appearance; this aircraft was jointly developed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.

The JF-17 serves as a cost-effective alternative to aircraft such as the F-16, with a price tag of about $25 million per unit. The airshow provides a unique opportunity to witness one of the first fighter jets developed outside of the Western alliance or Russia.

Brazil’s Embraer introduces its KC-390, a twin-engine military transport aircraft known as “Millennium.” It was put into service in 2019 and has since been adopted by several European nations.

This aircraft combines high performance with relatively low costs compared to competitors like the Boeing C-17. It’s impossible to discuss the Dubai Airshow without mentioning the giant Airbus A380, known as the “superjumbo,” of which the UAE possesses the largest fleet globally, with 116 aircraft based in Dubai.

Despite the cessation of A380 production in 2021 due to high costs, the airshow remains a rare chance to see this colossal model perform in impressive aerial displays, making it one of the standout highlights for visitors.
