Nakheel Unveils Design for the New Jebel Ali Mosque

The company Nakheel, part of Dubai Holding, has unveiled a design for a mosque intended to accommodate Friday prayers at Palm Jebel Ali, positioning it as the spiritual and cultural heart of the island. The mosque is designed to welcome approximately 1,000 worshippers, blending traditional Islamic heritage with modern architectural expression. Situated at the trunk of the island, it aligns with Nakheel’s vision of creating human-centered community destinations that foster connection, well-being, and a sense of belonging.

The mosque was designed by the renowned global architectural firm Skidmore Owings & Merrill, which infused classic Islamic forms and patterns with a contemporary perspective. A gracefully flowing canopied structure, inspired by textile designs, extends from the roof to the courtyard, providing shade while harmonizing visually with the surrounding landscape.

The design emphasizes tranquility and inclusivity, featuring clear pathways and pedestrian walkways among green spaces, as well as ample areas for ablution, creating a reflective and welcoming experience. Natural daylight filters softly throughout the space, establishing calm interiors that enhance the spiritual experience, offering comfort and serenity.

Standing at 40 meters tall, the mosque’s minaret will be a prominent landmark in Palm Jebel Ali, symbolizing faith and unity. Its elegant geometric form reflects the harmony and order inherent in both Islamic art and the design philosophy of Skidmore Owings & Merrill.

Khaled Al Malik, CEO of Dubai Holding, stated that the Friday prayer mosque at Palm Jebel Ali represents their commitment to creating communities that enrich lives and foster belonging. Designed to be an architectural icon and a place of worship, peace, and tranquility, the mosque will cater to the needs of both residents and visitors while symbolizing coexistence, spiritual harmony, and cultural dialogue. Collaborating with Skidmore Owings & Merrill enables them to deliver a design that amalgamates modernity and authenticity, aligning with their broader vision for the ongoing growth and prosperity of Dubai.
