National Carriers: A Balancing Act in the Competition Between Airbus and Boeing

The Dubai Airshow 2025 showcased a vibrant contest between aviation giants Airbus and Boeing, transforming the venue into a true battleground for unveiling new aircraft and demonstrating market strength while securing substantial deals with local, regional, and global carriers. National airlines played a crucial role in this competition, driven by their ongoing demand for new aircraft to support their worldwide expansion efforts.

Airlines such as Emirates, Flydubai, and Etihad showcased their unique ability to diversify their fleets through strategically calculated expansions, carefully selecting aircraft to meet market needs.

During the exhibition, the deals struck by national carriers clearly reflected the expansion strategies of major aviation companies and their eagerness to utilize the latest aircraft to broaden their global networks.

From significant agreements with Emirates to historic fleet transformations at Flydubai, Dubai reaffirmed its position as a global aviation hub.

Airbus

Airbus approached the Dubai Airshow 2025 with significant momentum, reaffirming its leadership in the global aviation sector. The event saw the signing of 14 firm orders and 180 memorandums of understanding for the delivery of 194 aircraft from seven customers, which included both single-aisle and wide-body jets, as well as cargo planes.

One of the most notable new clients was Flydubai, which announced a massive order for 150 units of the A321neo, valued at $24 billion, reflecting its ambitious fleet expansion plans. This is particularly significant as Flydubai is one of Boeing’s key customers in the region, making the agreement a prominent indicator of the changing competitive landscape in regional aviation.

Iberia expressed interest with an order for 20 A350 aircraft, while Barak placed an order for 10 A320neo jets.

Etihad Airways also entered as a new customer for the A330neo, placing a firm order for six aircraft, in addition to requests for seven A350-1000 jets and three cargo planes from the A350F line.

Furthermore, Emirates announced an increase in its order for A350-900 aircraft by eight units.

In terms of services, SalamAir opted for Airbus’s flight hour service to support its fleet of 15 A320 aircraft.

Boeing

Boeing’s presence at the Dubai Airshow 2025 was highly prominent, reinforcing its status among the aviation industry’s leaders, with considerable interest from UAE and African carriers.

Among the most significant agreements at the exhibition was that of Emirates, which revealed a massive order for 65 Boeing 777-9 jets, valued at $38 billion, representing the largest commitment of its kind at the show for Boeing, along with future options to convert some jets to newer models within the 777X family.

This move underscores Emirates’ confidence in the 777X program despite production-related challenges.

Boeing’s agreements were not limited to Emirates, as it also solidified its partnership with Flydubai, which signed a memorandum of understanding to purchase 75 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft worth approximately $13 billion, alongside an order for 60 GEnx 1B engines, including long-term service and maintenance.

These agreements illustrate that the Boeing-Flydubai relationship extends beyond mere aircraft purchases, encompassing sustainable operational and technical support, reflecting the airline’s strategy for fleet modernization and improved operational efficiency.

In the context of the African market, Ethiopian Airlines announced its commitment to purchase 11 Boeing 737-8 aircraft.
