Study: Significant Shift in UAE Youth’s Career Aspirations

A recent study conducted by Al-Futtaim in collaboration with the American University in Dubai, KPMG Middle East, and G42 Group, reveals a significant shift in the career aspirations of Emirati youth.

Titled “The Future of Emirati Youth,” this report provides insights for policymakers, employers, and the youth themselves, serving as a roadmap for governments, businesses, and academic institutions to better equip the future workforce in the UAE. The study emphasizes the need to look beyond quotas and targets by adopting a quality-driven approach to talent development.

Based on a three-part initiative launched by Al-Futtaim, the study highlights the growing ambitions of young Emiratis, gathered through a survey involving more than 500 participants aged between 18 and 25. The findings indicate that 53% of Emirati youth prioritize work-life balance when selecting an employer, while 51% value a positive and supportive workplace environment.

Additionally, cultural dynamics play a crucial role in their career journeys, with parents and family identified as a primary influence on their professional decisions. A notable 82% of respondents believe that an ideal workplace fosters creativity and innovation while celebrating individual achievements.

The study also points out that young Emiratis seek environments that prioritize personal growth (81%), uphold moral values (81%), and encourage teamwork (79%). By cultivating strong leadership, open communication, and collaboration, organizations can create a culture that empowers the next generation, leading to a sense of appreciation and inspiration for success.

Mira Al-Futtaim, Chairperson of Al-Futtaim’s Emiratization Council and CEO of the Al-Futtaim Educational Foundation, stated that this generation of Emirati youth is actively shaping the future of work, backed by a clear vision of their aspirations.

The research findings indicate that youth possess advanced digital skills and a broad awareness of global developments, along with a strong ability to adapt to modern trends such as artificial intelligence and automation.

Despite these promising attributes, young people face significant challenges, including fierce competition for entry-level positions and a lack of essential practical skills needed in the job market. This study serves as an important roadmap for all stakeholders, facilitating collaborative efforts to enable youth to unlock their potential for the benefit of the nation and its sustainable development.
