Sustainability is a fundamental part of the UAE’s identity and future vision. Since its establishment, the country has prioritized environmental responsibility as a core value, inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who viewed the environment as crucial to sustainable development.
Due to this vision, the UAE has become a global model for sustainable development across various sectors, especially in civil aviation. Over the past 15 years, the country has implemented a clear plan to reduce the environmental footprint of the aviation sector. A significant milestone occurred in 2012 when the UAE presented its first national plan to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aimed at decreasing carbon dioxide emissions from aviation, reaffirming its long-term commitment to environmental preservation in this vital sector.
This effort was followed by a detailed plan in 2018, which was rated among the best worldwide.
Recently, the UAE’s Cabinet approved the third edition of this plan, which has been submitted to ICAO, further confirming the country’s serious commitment to achieving tangible results.
The UAE has been a pioneer in implementing the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), a global framework adopted by ICAO in 2016 and put into practice in 2019.
The UAE joined CORSIA during its voluntary phase in 2020, and by the end of 2024, it will launch the first digital platform in the region to apply this scheme as part of its major transformational projects. Furthermore, the country has developed advanced regulatory frameworks to promote the production and utilization of low-carbon fuels and enhance collaboration among all components of the aviation ecosystem to meet sustainability objectives.
On the international front, the UAE plays a leadership role by serving as vice-chair to two key committees at ICAO: the Committee on Environmental Protection in Aviation and the Committee on Climate Change and Environment, both essential in shaping the future of sustainable aviation.
Domestically, the transportation sector is a key component of the UAE’s strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Among the leading initiatives is the “National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Roadmap,” which aims to produce 700 million liters of sustainable aviation fuel annually by 2030, contributing to a reduction of approximately 4.8 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
Additionally, the UAE introduced the “Global Sustainable Aviation Market” (GSAM) to foster investment and innovation while promoting international collaboration in this sector, which has been recognized by ICAO as an official annual event within its agenda.
The UAE has also strengthened its research capabilities by signing a memorandum of understanding between the General Civil Aviation Authority and Volar Air Mobility to develop the first green aviation technology center in the country. This aims to enhance clean energy solutions, support research and development in sustainable aviation technologies, and promote international cooperation on this critical issue.
The civil aviation community within the UAE is actively contributing to the shift toward sustainable aviation through several notable initiatives, including:
- Collaboration between ADNOC, BP, and Masdar to produce hydrogen and sustainable fuel from municipal waste.
- The UAE Sustainable Aviation Fund, valued at $200 million, launched by Emirates Airline.
- A commercial agreement between Etihad Airways and Saftavia to manage condensation routes and future carbon credits in daily operations.
- A partnership between Etihad Airways and Twelve for the development and utilization of sustainable aviation fuel.
- A collaboration between Emirates Airlines and Shell for the production of blended sustainable fuel and ensuring a reliable supply chain nationwide.
National carriers have also conducted test flights using sustainable fuel, such as the “ecoFlight” initiative by Etihad Airways in 2021 and a trial flight by Emirates using 100% sustainable fuel in 2023.
The UAE’s leadership is also evident through its hosting of numerous major international events related to aviation, including ICAO’s third conference on aviation and alternative fuel (CAAF/3) in 2023, which resulted in an announcement made in Dubai for a global framework on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and low-carbon fuel, aiming to reduce carbon emissions from international aviation by 5% by 2030.
Additionally, the country is scheduled to host the Global Forum to support the implementation and the Global Sustainable Aviation Market (GISS GSAM) in February 2025, alongside the Future of Sustainable Aviation Congress, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to enhancing global efforts toward a sustainable aviation ecosystem. With a clear vision, continuous innovation, and effective international collaboration, the UAE is actively steering aviation towards a more developed and sustainable future.
