The United Arab Emirates has established itself as a global hub for food supply chains amidst increasing challenges in the global food system. This is attributed to its strategic geographical position that connects continents, along with advanced infrastructure that includes world-class ports, airports, and modern land transport networks. Additionally, the adoption of smart solutions enhances logistical efficiency and contributes to food security at both regional and international levels.
Logistics experts assert that the UAE, with its diverse resources, is well-positioned to leverage both current and future opportunities in the regional and global food logistics market.
According to a report by Mordor Intelligence, the value of the food logistics market in the Middle East is estimated to reach approximately $67.14 billion by 2025, and it is projected to grow to $100.59 billion by 2030, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 8.42% until 2030.
The UAE ranks first regionally and third globally in the “Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index,” trailing only behind China and India.
The “UAE Food Cluster Economy” initiative launched by the Ministry of Economy and Tourism marks a significant shift in empowering the private sector to spearhead development across legislative areas, initiatives, and projects.
This initiative aims to integrate all stakeholders within a cohesive framework that includes farms, factories, supply chains, and retail, addressing challenges with a win-win mentality to ensure benefits for all parties and to bolster the country’s competitiveness.
The country’s ports play a vital role in cementing the UAE’s leadership and enhancing its logistical stature in the food sector, with Jebel Ali Port handling about 73% of the UAE’s food and beverage trade by value. The port connects businesses with over 150 ports worldwide, ensuring a seamless and secure international food trade.
The recently disclosed technical and design details of the “Dubai Food Zone” by DP World further elevate Dubai’s status in food supply chains. This project will be developed in phases, with the first phase projected to launch in 2027.
The zone will provide a comprehensive ecosystem for the food sector, featuring advanced facilities for temperature-controlled storage, primary and secondary processing centers, digital management solutions, wholesale and retail facilities, as well as a dedicated area for gourmet food catering to both businesses and consumers.
Mohammed Nasser, an expert at Halal Approval Global, stated that the UAE’s geographical situation is globally strategic, connecting the Middle East, Asia, and Africa and making it a convergence point for various nationalities and regulations, particularly those related to the global food system and halal food framework. He emphasized that the country’s well-integrated infrastructure significantly enhances its location’s importance and efficacy.
He further noted that advanced ports, airports, and road networks have prepared the UAE to be a pivotal hub for global food distribution, asserting that strong infrastructure forms the foundation for the effectiveness of supply chains, much like how any production system relies on essential tools for operational efficiency.
Mohammed Badruddin, warehouse manager at Al Sharqi Logistics Services, indicated that the UAE’s geographical location, combined with its advancements in logistics, makes it one of the key countries for managing vast amounts of goods flowing between nations. He mentioned that the UAE’s port system serves most of the world’s ports and plays a crucial role in connecting trade routes between Asia, Europe, and Africa, supported by a sophisticated network of roads and airports across all emirates.
Additionally, he highlighted that the UAE has commenced operations of a freight train network, with plans to extend it for passenger transport in the future, thereby enhancing delivery operations and bolstering the competitiveness of the national logistics sector.
Regarding global challenges in supply chains, Badruddin pointed out issues such as insurance, price volatility, and stability, emphasizing that the UAE provides a safe and secure environment for goods transport through its various ports, adhering to the highest health and environmental standards to mitigate various risks.
