Saeed Al Suwaidi, the permanent representative of the UAE Mission to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), affirmed that the UAE is renewing its ambition within ICAO with an innovative aviation vision. He highlighted that the country possesses several advantages that qualify it for a new seat on the organization’s council, noting its relationship with ICAO dates back to 1972.
During his address via video call from Montreal at the third meeting of the Civil Aviation Media Network, organized by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in Dubai, Al Suwaidi stated that the UAE intends to reapply for council membership in the upcoming session. He emphasized that the presence of the UAE’s permanent mission serves as a bridge to enhance the initiatives and projects put forth by the government on the international stage.
He pointed out that the UAE is among the first countries to present tangible projects in the field of artificial intelligence tailored for the civil aviation sector. He explained that there is a global and local challenge related to the shortage of skilled professionals capable of meeting the rising demand in this sector, particularly given the significant growth being witnessed domestically. Al Suwaidi noted that artificial intelligence will play a pivotal role in bridging this gap and fulfilling the need for experts and specialists.
Additionally, Al Suwaidi revealed the establishment of a comprehensive laboratory for managing artificial intelligence projects in civil aviation during the upcoming assembly of the organization, which will be operated by a team of specialized IT experts.
He underlined that the UAE is taking leading steps in the implementation of artificial intelligence technologies in civil aviation and aspires to be a global model in this field through strategic partnerships and innovative initiatives that will be announced during the next general assembly. The meeting organized by the GCAA highlighted the nation’s efforts to support ICAO, featuring the participation of over 25 media partners from various local, regional, and international outlets.
This meeting held special significance as it took place just before the ICAO council elections scheduled between September 23 and October 1, during which 193 members will compete for 36 seats. The UAE has maintained its council membership since 2007 through re-elections every three years, reflecting its leadership position in the global aviation sector.
The meeting also covered key current issues, including efforts towards a more sustainable aviation system and carbon emission reductions, as well as future developments in airport infrastructure. Furthermore, it addressed the international cooperation programs led by the UAE to support the global development of the civil aviation sector.
The organization of the third meeting of the Civil Aviation Media Network exemplifies the GCAA’s commitment to enhancing communication with its media partners and shedding light on the UAE’s influential role in shaping the future of international civil aviation.
