The Emsteel Group has announced a strategic partnership with Danieli, a global leader in metallurgy technology, to launch the first pilot project for the electric gas operational heater (ePGH) in the iron sector.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in Emsteel’s efforts to decarbonize and underscores its leading role in advancing the region’s adoption of cutting-edge, low-emission industrial processes.
The project will replace traditional natural gas heaters with an electric alternative in Emsteel’s direct reduction plants, contributing to a reduction of over 2,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually by utilizing clean electricity.
This innovation demonstrates the company’s commitment to achieving a 40% reduction in its steel sector emissions by 2030 and represents a crucial step in its broader sustainable iron strategy.
The system was designed in collaboration with the research and development department of the Italian firm Danieli, undergoing a comprehensive series of simulations, tests, and precise modeling to ensure optimal performance in industrial settings.
The project’s pilot phase will operate at a capacity of 1.3 megawatts, with plans to expand to 22.7 megawatts in the future, paving the way for a transformative shift in decarbonizing thermal processes within the industry. It is the first pilot of its kind globally in the iron sector, serving as a scalable model for future modernization efforts.
