DB World Sokhna Handles 24% of Egyptian Trade by 2025

In exclusive comments, a spokesperson has stated that Sokhna Port is on a rapid trajectory to achieve a new milestone this year, with expectations to exceed one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by the end of 2025. This figure would represent approximately 24% of Egypt’s total import and export activities, increasing from 21% in 2024. This growth underscores the port’s rising significance as a central hub in both Egyptian and regional trade.

Additionally, over 1,000 employees work directly at DP World Egypt, alongside thousands of indirect jobs supported by supply chains and port-related services. Notably, around 600 staff are employed in the logistics sector, with Egyptian nationals constituting more than 98% of the workforce at the port.
The company also indirectly contributes to creating over 3,000 jobs through its various business units in Egypt, fostering economic growth and local talent development in the transportation and logistics sectors.

Moreover, the spokesperson highlighted that programs like “Grow,” designed to train university graduates, have played a pivotal role in preparing a new generation of leadership within the logistics field. With the upcoming inauguration of the Sokhna Logistics Complex, there is an expectation of creating additional high-quality jobs in areas such as warehouse management, inventory control, and value-added logistics services, along with expanded training and digital skills development initiatives.

Since 2008, DP World has been a reliable strategic partner in advancing trade growth in Egypt, having invested over $1.3 billion (approximately 4.77 billion dirhams) to enhance the capacity of Egyptian ports, modernize their operational systems, and integrate Sokhna Port into a broader global supply chain network.
On October 26, a new logistics complex in Sokhna will be opened, marking a significant development within DP World’s integrated system in Egypt and serving as a cornerstone for boosting regional and international trade capacities.

The logistics complex, which has an investment of 312 million dirhams and covers an area of 300,000 square meters, is strategically located within the Suez Canal Economic Zone. It will house both bonded and non-bonded warehouses, container storage yards, customs clearance facilities, and value-added services such as packaging, labeling, and inventory management.

By consolidating multiple logistics functions into a single facility, this complex will help to reduce supply times, lower costs, and enhance the competitive edge of Egyptian exports.

Recently, the company announced a new strategic initiative to develop a state-of-the-art cold storage facility in October City, with total investments of around $29 million. This facility aims to meet the growing demand for cold chain services in Egypt and supports the expansion of logistics activities in the food, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing sectors. This development aligns with DP World’s strategy to bolster logistical infrastructure in Egypt and enable supply chains to operate more efficiently in light of growing trade flows.

The spokesperson articulated that the company’s vision extends beyond merely developing the port, encompassing the establishment of a comprehensive and sustainable logistics framework. This includes managing ports, third-party logistics services, and customs clearance, allowing for the provision of seamless, secure, and effective supply chain solutions.

These initiatives showcase DP World’s commitment to supporting trade growth and enhancing economic development in Egypt, solidifying its status as a central hub for trade and logistics within the region.

Regarding the impact of geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea region on its operations, the spokesperson emphasized that DP World Egypt has maintained high efficiency in facilitating import and export activities despite recent challenges. The sector has demonstrated considerable resilience amid the difficulties observed in the Red Sea area recently.

As the Egyptian economy recovers and its fundamentals strengthen, the company has successfully delivered competitive, comprehensive solutions covering all stages of the supply chain. This capability has enabled it to maintain high service levels while increasing the proportion of goods moving from origin to destination, which now accounts for around 24% of Egypt’s total import and export activities, up from 21% the previous year.

The spokesperson noted that this achievement is a clear testament to the market’s confidence in DP World’s capabilities and the reliable service solutions offered to enhance the flow of Egyptian trade, boosting its regional and global competitiveness. The company remains committed to ensuring efficient cargo handling and reliable access to global markets, reinforcing the port’s role as a primary logistics hub for Egyptian and regional trade.
