Bob Mumgaard, co-founder and global CEO of Commonwealth Fusion Systems, stated that the UAE possesses all the attributes necessary to position itself as a leader in the development and adoption of fusion energy technology on both regional and global fronts.
He highlighted the UAE’s impressive track record in organizing and executing innovative and ambitious energy projects, which reflects its capability to transform futuristic visions into tangible achievements. This contribution is essential for building an advanced and sustainable energy system. Mumgaard emphasized that the UAE’s leadership in renewable energy, advanced technologies, and peaceful energy solutions demonstrates its vision and practical expertise for leading a new phase of transformation in the energy sector. This positions the UAE as a global hub for accelerating the adoption of clean fusion energy, which will define the future of sustainable energy in the coming decades.
Additionally, he noted that fusion technology aligns directly with the UAE’s Climate Neutrality 2050 strategy due to its capacity to provide a nearly limitless and emission-free energy source, independent of geographic location or climatic conditions.
He elaborated that this energy type represents a clean, scalable, and distributable source, making it essential for achieving decarbonization across various sectors. Moreover, the capacity of fusion to produce both heat and electricity opens significant opportunities for supporting industrial processes and water desalination, thereby enhancing the UAE’s leadership in advanced energy solutions and confirming its role as a driving force in the transition to a low-carbon sustainable economy on both regional and global levels.
Regarding the UAE’s ability to host advanced energy projects, Mumgaard affirmed that the nation has a strong scientific and technological infrastructure, backed by qualified national talent and a solid foundation in technology and artificial intelligence, making it an ideal location for future energy initiatives.
He mentioned that Commonwealth Fusion Systems views the UAE as a strategic partner capable of accelerating the development and application of fusion technology, whether through direct investments or collaboration with leading research institutions such as Masdar City and Khalifa University. This partnership could significantly enhance the UAE’s status as a regional center for research and innovation in clean energy and future technologies.
Mumgaard pointed out that the UAE has set an inspiring example in supporting innovation and financing advanced energy projects, thanks to its bold vision, capital reserves, and proven track record in executing world-class initiatives. This has enabled the country to mitigate the risks associated with new technologies and create an encouraging environment for the expansion of future energy projects.
He concluded that the UAE’s experience in investing in, accelerating, and deploying clean energy projects serves as a model for developing nations in the Middle East. These countries can leverage smart partnerships, knowledge transfer, and economies of scale to build their technical and research capabilities and engage in the regional fusion energy ecosystem.
