Denata Appoints Marwan Issa as General Manager in Zanzibar

Denata has announced the appointment of Marwan Issa as the General Manager for its operations in Zanzibar, reinforcing its leadership structure in one of the fastest-growing tourism and aviation hubs in East Africa.

In his new role, Marwan will be fully responsible for the operational performance and business development of Denata in Zanzibar. He will oversee ground handling services and cargo operations, aiming to enhance the quality of service provided to airlines and airport partners. This marks the first time a local has been appointed to lead Denata’s operations at international airports outside the UAE.

Career Progression

Marwan’s appointment reflects his steady career advancement within Denata, starting from when he joined the company in 2017. He has held various leadership positions focused on operational management and performance between the UAE and Zanzibar, allowing him to gain extensive knowledge in ground handling and airport operations. Most recently, he served as the Head of Operations and Acting General Manager in Zanzibar, where he supported the business during a period of growth and increased activity.

Development Focus

Alexandra Dawson, the Regional CEO for Airport Operations in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa at Denata, stated, “Marwan’s journey within Denata showcases our strong commitment to developing internal capabilities. He possesses a deep understanding of our operational standards and a clear focus on performance and partnership building. We are confident in his ability to build upon the solid foundations established in Zanzibar.”

Marwan’s appointment underlines Denata’s long-term commitment to nurturing Emirati talent and creating an environment where promising leaders can advance to senior roles in its international operations. Currently, over 280 Emiratis are employed across various Denata activities, with more than 100 holding leadership positions, reflecting the company’s sustainable investment in developing skills and providing international experience opportunities.

Denata currently offers ground handling and cargo services to 27 airlines in Zanzibar, supporting around 5,700 flights annually and serving more than 1.3 million passengers each year, in addition to handling nearly 6,000 tons of cargo. The “Marhaba” brand, which specializes in airport hospitality services in Zanzibar, provides lounge access and passenger assistance, enhancing the travel experience. These services make a crucial contribution to the rapid growth of air traffic at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, which today welcomes over two million passengers annually and continues to expand as Zanzibar solidifies its status as a premier leisure destination and air transport hub in East Africa.

With a steadfast focus on safety, efficiency, and quality service, Denata is committed to supporting the growth of the aviation sector in Zanzibar and strengthening connections to global markets.
