Dubai Aims to Establish a Unified Free Zone Platform

The Free Zones Council in Dubai has discussed a proposal to establish a unified platform serving all free zones within an integrated system. This initiative aims to standardize procedures, enhance institutional coordination, improve governmental service efficiency, and boost the competitiveness of Dubai’s business environment.

This discussion took place during the 33rd meeting of the Free Zones Council, chaired by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who holds multiple prestigious positions including President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Airports.

In a post on the platform X, he stated that efforts have focused on enhancing government collaboration, improving regulatory readiness, and continuing the development of the business environment in free zones.

Moreover, the discussions encompassed initiatives to enhance investor experience, the proposal for a unified platform for free zones, Dubai’s cashless strategy, and a review of the achievements of Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) over the past 40 years, highlighting its role in establishing Dubai as a global hub for trade and logistics.

The council also examined ways to strengthen cooperation in support of integrated efforts and to facilitate business operations within free zones, ultimately enhancing the investor experience and improving procedural efficiency.

Additional topics included compliance support and bolstering the readiness of free zones. This was in light of coordination related to assessing the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) standards with the intention of conducting a systematic evaluation of money laundering and terrorist financing risks for all activities and legal entities. Measures are to be taken to mitigate impacts and associated risks. The Dubai Economic Security Center also presented challenges surrounding the process of opening bank accounts for licensed companies.
