Experts and Specialists Discuss Solutions to Challenges in Energy and Water Sustainability Projects

The panel discussion titled “Pioneers in Energy and Water: Challenges and Solutions,” held during the “Winter Festival” organized by the Union Electricity and Water Company in collaboration with the Federal Youth Foundation, at the Saud bin Saqr Energy and Innovation Complex, served as a specialized economic platform for exchanging insights and formulating actionable recommendations to tackle the challenges facing entrepreneurs in the energy and water sectors.

This session provided an interactive space to explore ways to enhance the business environment in these vital sectors by proposing practical solutions that bolster the sustainability of emerging projects, expedite their market integration, and enhance their competitiveness, thereby supporting the nation’s commitment to innovation and investment in green economy, water security, and sustainable energy.

A distinguished group of experts and specialists participated in the session alongside young entrepreneurs, officials from relevant authorities, and members of the Federal National Council. The discussion highlighted various challenges, including regulatory, financial, and technical issues, market entry barriers, registration and licensing requirements, fierce competition with large companies, as well as difficulties in building trust with clients in specialized technological sectors.

Sheikha Al-Balooshi, the Executive Director of Human Resources at the Union for Water and Electricity, emphasized that supporting entrepreneurs has become a critical focus in the development plans for the water and energy sectors. She pointed out that the Saud bin Saqr Energy and Innovation Complex, which was inaugurated in November 2024, embodies the state’s direction towards transforming innovation into a sustainable economic driver.

Moreover, Al-Balooshi noted that the Union for Water and Electricity, in partnership with the UAE Youth Council for Entrepreneurship, has launched an initiative aimed at registering contractors who are small and medium-sized enterprise owners in the water and electricity services sector. This initiative seeks to alleviate market entry burdens through exemptions from certain guarantees and registration requirements, supplemented with specialized training programs that enable them to initiate small and medium-sized ventures and gradually expand with confidence.

Entrepreneur Omar Al-Muhairi, founder of “Live Smart,” a company focused on designing and installing smart home systems, shared his experiences with the initial challenges, particularly the difficulty in convincing customers of the benefits of smart solutions and establishing trust in a rapidly evolving technological market. He noted that while the laws and regulations in the UAE create a supportive environment for businesses, the contemporary tech sectors require greater regulatory flexibility to keep pace with rapid innovation and evolving business models. Since its establishment in 2019, his company has successfully completed over 200 projects across various Emirates and has actively participated in more than 14 local and international exhibitions.

Al-Muhairi pointed out that smart control systems for energy, lighting, and security, as well as home device interconnectivity, are no longer mere supplementary solutions but essential economic tools that significantly contribute to reducing energy consumption, lowering operational costs, and improving resource management efficiency.

Entrepreneur Nasser Hassan Mulla stressed the importance of providing high-quality support to project owners and investors involved in sustainability and efficient energy and water consumption fields. He proposed that a special category should be created for them when granting business licenses, classifying their projects under acceleration programs, allowing them access to additional support packages and regulatory and operational incentives to encourage youth participation in this vital sector and expedite the growth of their ventures.

Mulla highlighted that the primary challenge young entrepreneurs face during the initial stages of launching their projects is effective marketing and customer outreach. He explained that the novelty of their experiences and limited practical knowledge complicate the process of gaining trust from consumers and partners, compounded by budget constraints for promotion and challenges in investing in professional digital marketing tools and establishing stable sales channels.

Additionally, Mulla noted that young entrepreneurs often grapple with the pressures associated with the fear of failure and the instability of revenue during the initial operational months. Overcoming this stage, he maintained, necessitates the provision of specialized mentoring programs, organized marketing support, and effective communication platforms that connect startups with government entities and major corporations, enhancing their chances for sustainability and growth.

Participants concluded that transforming the challenges in the energy and water sectors into real growth opportunities requires deeper collaboration between the public and private sectors, a broadening of financing and technical support frameworks, and updating regulatory structures to ensure the attraction of innovation and the protection of emerging investments, cementing the positions of these sectors as key drivers of the green economy within the nation.
